Tackling the Climate Crisis: NEWARI Calls for Integration of ‘Water’ in Enugu Climate Policy

As the journey to transition from “Coal City” to a greener economy begins in Enugu State, NEWARI is proud to be part of the inaugural “Inception Meeting & Stakeholders Engagement for Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan” by Enugu State Government. The meeting, which was held at Old Government Lodge, Enugu, on Thursday, 18th July 2024, brought together critical stakeholders working towards a sustainable future for the state.

At the meeting, Mr. Ikenna Ugwu, NEWARI’s Communications Director stressed the importance of getting it right at this early stage of the policy development by ensuring water is placed at the center of the climate policy. He emphasized that the climate crisis is, in fact, a water crisis while stating that the devastating impacts of climate change are felt most profoundly through water, manifesting as either catastrophic flooding or debilitating drought.

As Enugu State takes bold steps towards a sustainable future, NEWARI urges Enugu State Government, policymakers and all concerned stakeholders to prioritize water at the forefront of climate action. NEWARI’s recommendations are clear and concise:

1. Water must be at the heart of climate action, with dedicated funding allocated to water-related climate initiatives.

2. Water Resources Management must be a key component of the Climate Policy, ensuring a holistic approach to mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change.

As the quest for transitioning to a greener economy heightens in the state, NEWARI maintains that by putting water at the center of Enugu State’s climate strategy, the state can build a resilient future for generations to come.
